My Meeting with an UN Ambassador
October 12, 2003
Today, completely by coincidence, at Keur N'Dey (sic), a Senegalese restaurant in an upscale part of Brooklyn, I found myself in the middle of a reception for Sierra Leone's Ambassador to the United Nations....
After, discussions on modern African History and the potential private sector collaborations between West Africa and the Carribean, the ambassador's party stood up to say a prayer of thanks for the success of the the day's event (probably some sort of symposium). At that point someone in the group invited my friend, myself, and the entire restaurant, incuding the waiters, to join hands as the prayer was raised. Afterwards, I walked humbly up to the ambassador, whose name I still do not know. I asked him about he signifigance of the show of solidarity among developing countries in the world trade talks in Cancun last month. He said that finally, the developing nations are talking among eachother and that they are beginning to grasp the value of their resources. It seems that the way forward for Africa must include collective bargaining strategies in regard to world trade, as well as intercontinental trade, and alternative energy. I could not help but think of my brother who has worked in Sierra Leone, as well as other African nations, on development projects . I could not help but wonder what the effect of alliances between Africans, Carribean's, and American's of African descent will be.
