Progressive Google News?

November 6, 2003

progressive google newsAround September 11th, 2003, I started noticing news from Alternet and even Guerrilla News Network on the front page of Google News. Ever since reading a story in Wired Magazine about the politics of Google, I've been interested in how the algorithms that produce Google News shape our perception of reality.

I also would love to see a similar algorithm that produced displayed photographs more heavily than text for televised masses. Of course it would be nice if they carried some Creative Commons licenses to reuse, but either way, I think Google News could be useful for young students and others who aren't the best text readers to get a better sense of the days events than the 8 o'clock news.

There is an interview with Google News founder Krishna Bhara at the Online Journalism Review. He says, "One of the things that makes us objective is we show all points of view. Even if you disagree with one, we give you both -- the majority and the minority point of view. The ones you don't agree with are education. It's nice to know what the other side is thinking. You'll see left-leaning ones as much as much as you see right-leaning ones. Frankly, the software doesn't know the difference between left and right, which is good."
