Join Activists of Color in Brooklyn Court Thursday 12/18

December 17, 2003

dennis kucinichOrganize for a strong turn-out on Thursday, Dec. 18th at 9:00 a.m., 120 Schermerhorn (between Smith St.; Boerum Pl.), Brooklyn Criminal Court, Rm AP-2. Train Directions: A/C/G to Hoyt Schermerhorn, 2/3/4/5 to Bourough Hall, N/R to Court Street, F to Jay Street.

In the early morning hours of November 16, 2003, the NYPD engaged in an attack on a benefit party hosted at the Critical Resistance space in Brooklyn, New York for the 1st Anarchist People of Color (APOC) conference. Approximately 20 marked police cruisers arrived around 2am in response to an officer's report of someone standing outside the party allegedly holding an "open container." Throngs of police indiscriminately sprayed chemical agents, beat people with nightsticks, punched, shoved, kicked and dragged people along sidewalks.

Eight people were arrested on charges including inciting a riot, obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. All 8 were released on their own recognizance during the early morning hours of November 17, and are going to court Thursday morning, 12/18, at 9am. With the unprovoked attack on our space, law enforcement has proven, once again, that it is engaged in a campaign to terrorize communities of color—particularly those organizers, activists and cultural workers that seek to create spaces of resistance .

We need to show the District Attorney the widespread community support behind the arrestees, and to stand together in declaring that harassment and brutality do not equal security in our communities.  Our alliance as a community is our safety! Please come out, and spread the word. Wear black to symbolize our solidarity and resistance. If we are not safe at our celebrations, in our homes or neighborhoods, WHERE ARE WE SAFE? Contact Critical Resistance at 718-398-2825 or www.criticalresistance.org.
