How to Visually Improve Creative Commons' Understanding

January 28, 2004

beyond_copyright.gifIt's been amazing how pervasive the recent NY Times article on "The Tyranny of Copyright?" has been with readers. The only letdown for me has been that it framed the conversation in a bipolar Copy Right and Copy Left terms. Similarly, I still find resistance when sharing about Creative Commons because people sometimes tend to think it represents some other "share everything" extreme.

To challenge this inaccurate black/white view of things, I recommend that we move beyond the single Creative Commons license image, and begin promoting the symbols that make up each type of license. I know we still need to push the Creative Commons meme into popular culture, but the success of the Share-Alike, No Derivative Works, Non-Commercial, or Sampling symbols will actually do more in the long run to distinguish the full spectrum of rights than the Creative Commons logo.
