RNC Smear Campaign reflects Strategy of Misinformation
January 6, 2004
As a politically active citizen who loves our country deeply, I am very dissappointed that the Republican National Committee has initiated a smear campaign on MoveOn.org, one of the few organizations that has awaked and inspired active participation in our democracy in the last few years. While the real story is that almost 3 million votes were cast to choose 15 amazing final ads, the RNC and other media outlets have chosen instead to focus on two of most extreme of the 1,500 citizen made submissions, comparing President Bush to Adolf Hitler, to make MoveOn seem like a radical organization. Reject this clear attempt to mislead and misinform.
This behavior by the RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie reflects a comfortableness with misrepresentation and misinformation that the Bush Administration seems to have embraced these past few years. Clearly the two ads in question are extreme and perhaps "Hate Speech." However, they are not "MoveOn ads" and should not be used to prove a stereotype some may have of the web-based network of nearly 2 million active citizens. Again, the real story is the democratic process in which nearly 3 million votes were cast to choose 15 finalist ads, which reflect the courage, hope, and deep patriotism of the MoveOn membership. They're creative, passionate, and totally unlike most of the political ads that are out there. I request that RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie apologize for making misleading statements about MoveOn.
Sample Note to Media Outlets:
As a politically active citizen, I want to make sure that The Washington Post
does not simply take the bait in the Republican National Committee's smear campaign on MoveOn.org. Yes, there were 2 ads out of 1,500 that were extreme and out of line. However, the real story is that 15 amazing finalists are left ( http://www.bushin30seconds.org ) after nearly 3 million votes narrowed the field from 1,500 citizen made ads. I trust that the Washington Post will make the right decision and tell the real story of democracy rising in America. Keep up the great work.

The Moveon ads themselves are actually quite lacking in impact and summarily uninteresting, bland little spots. The kids in dredlocks working on garbage trucks and assembly lines, if I'm not mistaken is'nt that embodying the sentiment of the Republicanized stereotype of liberals being a bunch of slackers and hence working for a living being our nightmare. I think Moveon dot org-ers need to stop helping the ads are an embarrassment to the integrity of the Democratic party not to mention SUCK. Here's my idea for an ad; First you see a picture of Kerry and some dark gloomy music. Then a deep monotonal voice booms out:"John Kerry, he wants a balanced budget. John Kerry wants to cut porkbarrel spending. John Kerry wants to cut the deficit in half leaving people with an optimistic future and leaving America stuck with a surplus. That bastard! Vote Bush,Dick and Colon You know why we made sodomy legal don't you?" End ad. O.k. here's another one and this one is golden. IT'S A SHOT OF GEORGE W. PLAYING GOLF AND TALKING TO THE MEDIA. THEN UNDERNEATH ON THE SCREEN COFFINS DRAPED IN AMERICAN FLAGS GO BY AS IF ON A CONVEYOR BELT. GEORGE IS STILL TALKING AS THE COFFINS KEEP GOING BY THEN MOURNERS, THEN MORE COFFINS. THEN IT SAYS AS THE SCREEN GOES BLACK; "WHILE GEORGE PLAYS GOLF BODIES ARE COMING BACK FROM THE GULF, ZERO FUNERALS ATTENDED" THEN THE SCREEN COMES BACK UP AS HE YELLS OUT "FORE!" AND SWINGS THE CLUB. END AD. Now that's a good ad!!!!!!!!
