How Democrats are Benefitting from their Diversity
February 11, 2004
Ever since I've been paying attention, Republicans and Democrats try to choose a Presidential Nominee as early as possible to minimize damage and save money for the 'real race'. But this year, the diverse and entertaining back and forth of the Democrats is clearly commanding more positive interest and attention from voters than the Bush Administration's investigations and squirmish interviews.
Think about it. If everyone dropped out and Kerry got coronated, then the same machine that churned out the boring and annoying 2000 election would take over the conversation. Fuzzy math, lock boxes, confusion. Instead, with Edwards, Dean, Kerry and Kucinich all ready to continue to the end, the Democratic Party has the potential to actually demonstrate the real political value of diversity.
As mentioned by Al Sharpton during one of the debates, conservatives have dominated American Politics not because they have better policies and ideas and strategies, but because they have been controlling the premise of the debate (from Berkeley Professor George Lakoff). Right now, Democrats are finally beginning to command the direction of the conversation. The only way to win the election is to keep the conversation going, because with multiple voices being heard, Karl Rove gets confused about his target.
