File Sharing goes Off-line

March 10, 2004

filesharingparty.jpgInvoking the idea of the Prohibition-Era Speakeasy, a group of Brooklyn citizens held an off-line file sharing party to "create a safe space for people to share music, meet good people, and have good conversation."

As the invitation stated, "The RIAA is suing people who swap mp3s online. So, obviously, sharing must move offline." Although it's probably not any less illegal, the file sharing party brought the human beings back into the peer 2 peer. It was cool to ask people about their music, instead of just grabbing files from some server. Although this party was basically full of mp3s, I think it would cool to share images through iPhoto 4, where you are allowed to grab each other's photos. Maybe iPhoto allows it because most people own the rights to their photos, where most don't legally own their music. Overall, a very cool experiment that I'm sure will continue.
