Grandmaster Flash and MSN

March 23, 2004

msnWhile at SXSW this past week, I went to this fun Microsoft sponsored event, which included some great Grandmaster Flash. But then things got strange when he tried to lead the crowd in a call and response ("Good Times" --- "MSN" ---"Good Times" -- "MSN"), and the crown started saying "Bullshit" instead. Creative Commons' Glenn Brown, who was there as well, posted a full account of the experience. I think it will go down as one of those perfect moments in early 2004, when authentic, legendary hip hop came together with global corporate branding to meet a maturing audience of listeners that is media literate enough to call out "bulls**t" when they see it.
