"People as Pirates:" A Test of the Commons
April 7, 2004 |
I just got invited to do my first major gig for an amazing poet and person, Alix Olson (on left with Pamela Means on guitar), to create a media slideshow for her performance of "Pirates" on Apirl 30 in North Hampton, MA. Alix is a high profile enough artist that it's not really in anyone's interest to use copyrighted material in her piece. However, her poem speaks about so many relevant and current themes and corporations that it seems impossible to avoid the temptation of searching google images without regard for copyright. As Alix writes in her poem, "these are people as pirates. we gotta steal back the truth." A perfect test of the emerging creative commons.
Update: I was a little disappointed with my first search for images of "Iraq War" in the CC search . I'll search Google and Indymedia, but I won't necessarily know the level of copyright. If anyone has images they'd like to contribute, please post a comment below.
