Disney, Moore, and the Opening for Media Leadership

May 6, 2004

moore_eisnerIn a perfect example of the potential for the media consolidation to control what the American people see and hear, Disney's Michael Eisner (pictured right) has foolishly fallen into a trap by blocking Miramax (owned by Disney) from distributing Michael Moore's new film, "Fahrenheit 9-11." Fortunately, we do live in a free country, so the film will surely get distributed before the election, right? If you wanna do something, MoveOn's got the phone numbers.

The good news, according to the May 5 article in the Washington Post, is that "Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) asked fellow members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation for a hearing on the Disney-Moore flap and what he called 'the disturbing pattern of politically based corporate censorship of the news media and the entertainment industry.'" Now, it's time for John Kerry and other leaders to fill this opening and call for decreasing big media's control over the national conversation. Media democracy is one of the few issues about which Americans are not divided, make it a winning issue for any politicians willing take a stand this year.

Weíve got them on the run now, and my friends and I are following an action plan that can turn friendships into empowerment. Itís as easy as spreading the word.
Right now sign up for daily reports from The American Progress Report. See through Bush lies and donít let anything slip past you. Spread the word though out your personal network and have each of your associates then spread it through theirs. Get everyone talking to their own friends and families about the truth and the ugly consequences.
Sign up for MoveOn.comís calls to action. When something powerful gets going you want to be a part of it. Spread that word through your network, too.
Go see ěThe Day After Tomorrow.î Download the posters from MoveOn and pass them out at the theaters showing the film.
Watch for the sudden, unannounced appearance of the anti-Bush novel, ěDer Furor.î Rumor has it that it will probably be coming out in late June. The right wing and the Bushies will try to keep it out of the stores, try to keep us from even hearing about it, so keep checking for it on the internet. ń And spread the word through your network.
Raise so much ruckus demanding the release of Fahrenheit 9-11 that every theater in every neighborhood will want to show it. Call your radio stations. Write to newspapers. Spread the word to your friends.
Watch for the documentary on John Kerry made by the people who made ěPumping Iron.î
In the meantime, go to CafePress.com and get some anti-bush bumper strips on your car. Carry some extras to give to people who admire yours and agree to put some on their own cars.
Keep spreading the word! Keep the pots boiling! Donít let anyone you know cool down into election-time apathy. We all need to take a stand this November!
Donít just sit there!
Spread the word!
