A Political World Series? Boston vs. Houston, Kerry vs. Bush

October 20, 2004

red sox winI first thought of the possibility when the series were beginning, but I didn't post about it because suddenly the Yankees were up 3-0. Now, with Boston poised in the 8th inning to be the first team possibly ever to tie the series from 3-0, and the Houston Astros up 3-2 against the Cardinals, a Massachussetts vs. Texas world series looks like it could happen.

In some ways, I feel like it would actually be perfect. Given that the United States seems more politicized than any time in recent history (at least in my 28 year old lifetime), it would be fitting that baseball fans would be so clearly faced with the reality of the political season. With the first game of the World Series being on October 23rd, a little more than a week before November 2, it's possible that the series could be climaxing literally the night before the election. Also, I think that the Motley Fool writer Jeff Hwang might have been onto something in his article about the probability that Boston could come back from 3-0 (which was 12.6%). He writes, "Watching Yankees first baseman Tony Clark bobble that ground ball in the bottom of the ninth, I had a vision of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner in the 1986 World Series. At that point, I just knew that the Red Sox would not only win the game but also come back and win the series."
