10x10 News: Photos Rise Above Articles

November 6, 2004

10x10Ever since discovering Google News in 2003, I imagined an image version that would essentially be a stream of images of the moment from news around the world. Then came Flickr in 2004, the maturing networked community of digital photographers whose tagging technology is revolutionizing photos and the internet. Now, I think 10x10 may be the synergy that represents the best version of an image news stream that I imagined a year ago. In its own words, Ten by Ten is "an interactive exploration of the words and pictures that define the time."

Ever since the first phase of the web in the 1990s, I have been looking for it to replace television as the most powerful medium in America. Television is a great drug, but in my view it is moving our culture toward a kind of collective ADD and Alzeimer's insomnia of sorts. The key to the web overtaking television is the combination of engaging images that also carry with it the collective wisdom of the semantic web. The Ten by Ten project seems to be getting close. Listen to the rhythm of the images of now. Also, if you're a developer or information artist, read their invitation for participation.
