Song of the Moment: A Sad Day in America

November 4, 2004

vert.kerry.concession.apI woke up today in a state of shock this morning. The subways were essentially silent, and my entire office was depressed during most of the day. My mom called me in the afternoon, and broke down as she shared her genuine fear about how screwed up the country might be for her children after another four years. After work on my way home, the faces on the subway were all looking distant and down, and for some reason I started singing, "It's a sad day in America" quietly over and over. When I got home I recorded a guitar version, which I think captures the mood of the moment for me and perhaps about a little less than half the country today, November 3, 2004.

How great that you can capture your mood and music in New York, and I can hear you coming out of my laptop in California.

My favorite part about the song is the not-so-minor key. The lyrics may be sad, but the song is far from gloomy. It even made me smile. There is hope deep down inside you and all of us.
