Tsunami Views from Brooklyn

December 31, 2004

TsunamiOver the last few days, I've been reading a lot of what been written about the tsunami in Asia, and seeing the death toll rise from 10,000 to 44,000 to now upwards of 120,000 has been saddening and difficult to understand. The numbers don't hit home, and since I don't watch much television, I haven't seen much video footage.

Yesterday I finally found some words and footage that enabled me to feel the human impact of this amazing and horrific act of the universe. First is a collection of video footage in the form of a BitTorrent file that makes it a quicker download (check link for details). In particular, I was struck by live footage taken from what seems like a tourist in Thailand who was standing in a building as the force of tsunami slowly destroys the area around the tourist.

And secondly, read this post from Jyll Taylor, who has spent the last year in Asia (and writing about her Introspective Journey), and was in a bungalow a few months ago that has probably been destroyed . The post includes an email that was sent to her friend by someone who was in Phuket, Thailand when the Tsunami hit.

Lastly, if you haven't already, give money to help. This is not just a month long relief effort. This is much bigger than September 11 in terms of deaths and devastation, and will take years of economic development to recover. Let's lead this effort.
