Control and Freedom for a Viral TV clip
February 20, 2006
I had just signed up for a YouTube membership a few weeks ago, and wondered about the excellent TV clips being posted by users. Now, according to a NY Times article, NBC has decided to send a takedown notice to YouTube about the Lazy
Sunday clip that had received 5 million+ views.
As per the freeculture.org email where I found out about this, "Several online commentators noted that NBC's response to YouTube, while legally justified, may have been short-sighted. The online popularity of "Lazy Sunday" has been credited with reviving interest in "Saturday Night Live" at a time when it is in need of some buzz.
Things are definitely getting interesting. As some point, we gotta acknowlege the economic value being created in this networked, peer to peer space.
