Free, Open Internet TV now Live: GetDemocracy.com
February 21, 2006
Direct from the press release: The Participatory Culture Foundation is pleased to announce the release of the beta version for Windows of our flagship video player. With this last piece falling into place, we’re also announcing a new name for this free and open-source internet TV platform: Democracy. You can download the Democracy player for Windows right now, free as always, on our new community website:
Mac users can also upgrade to version 0.8 of the Democracy player (formerly DTV) at GetDemocracy.com. There’s currently a beta version for Linux users also, so the Democracy player is now cross-platform.
In addition to the Windows version of the video player, today we’re also unveiling the GetDemocracy.com community website, featuring lots of new resources: Democracy user forums, illustrated walk-throughs of the player, a cool t-shirt for sale in the new Democracy online store, the ability to accept online donations to support the open-source development of Democracy, and more…
There’s an opportunity for all of us to create a new, open mass medium of online television. We’re building the Democracy internet TV platform so that watching internet video channels will be as easy as watching TV, and broadcasting a channel will be open to everyone. It is crucial for the public interest that there exists a free and open tool set for participating in the emerging mass medium of online video.
