Colin as a Featured Commoner on the CC blog

Check an interview with yours truly over on the Creative Commons blog. Feels cool to be recognized by the folks over at CC. Thanks Cameron!

Colin Mutchler is one of the original CC success stories. Back in 2003, he posted his song, My Life, to Opsound under a CC BY-SA license. A month later a violinist name Nora Beth added a violin track, calling the new work My Life Changed. It was one of the first instances of CC facilitating unsolicited collaboration, laying the ground work for the amazing remix culture we have seen develop over the past 5 years. Mutchler has since expanded his resume, working on photography and media production as well as his music. We caught up with him recently to find more about what he has been up to since we last checked in - needless to say, it has been a while.

Beyond Lipstick, Please - Letter to MSNBC

Hi,

I am a concerned voter. It is 2008. This is a historic election where our country is facing major challenges about how we choose to take responsibility for ourselves and our people, how we interact with other countries and cultures, and how we choose to impact the current and future changing climate and ecology.

And yet again, the conversation on stations like MSNBC is spending nearly a full news day bringing guests onto national television to discuss a comment about lipstick.

Yes, there is sexism and racism in our culture. But this election should not be about catch phrases that Barack Obama or John McCain say, or who is looking like a better candidate to win this week. It should be a constructive conversation about what's important to our citizens and our country.

Today's conversation reminds me of what John Stewart said to Tuck Carlson on Crossfire a few years ago applies to you as well: "You're hurting America."

As a citizen and consumer of your content, here is my request to you. Please lead and take responsibility for the conversation that you create on your national television station that millions of citizens and families watch every day.

Thank you,
Colin

Living Buildings & Green Realities with Ethan Timm (Updated)

The first 'active conversation' of the 2nd season of the activefree podcast is with college friend Ethan Timm, an Architectural Designer for SERA Architects in Portland, Oregon.

Among other things, the conversation includes his professional experience with one of the buildings in Cascadia's Living Building Challenge, his personal challenges of lenolium floors in his "green" house, and his interestingly cautionary views on the green product design craze.

He also mentioned the Kill-a-Watt, which is a simple product that measures how much energy your appliances are costing (you might be surprised).

Culture "Premixed" for Collaboration

Over the last few years, I released free a cappella tracks of song fragments through the popular remix site CCmixter.org, explicitly ‘premixed’ (prepared for remixing) for producers to build on my words and music. Over 60+ remixes later, I am releasing the best 10 tracks commercially, sharing the revenues with the producers, and helping to build the market for open source music.

Check out the Premixed Story video that shares how this unique album came to life.

Before I post my final podcast from my amazing year at Insead, I wanted to post the following quicktime presentation of my trip to Bangalore, Mumbai, and Kerala in India. Particularly now following a violent week in Mumbai, Lebanon and Israel, I wanted to make sure to post this.

Overall, the experience of visiting the 'chaotic democracy,' 'functional anarchy,' and 'lumbering elephant' was amazing. Hope the video comes through to all of you iTunes subscribers.
The latest podcast from INSEAD Singapore highlights a new remix of "Everyday Choices" from teru as well as a new "Blue Ocean" song written collaboratively with friends while on a trip to China. Five remixes so far, and I include my favorite so far, "Blue Ocean Electro Rmx" by Beatbros. Once I head back to the France campus, I'll be talking with the authors of the Blue Ocean strategy book, W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, to see if they'll endorse the song.

Hope everyone is well. Keep up the good work and send feedback via the comments or over the voice mail at +1 206-984-3144.

First Experiences of INSEAD Singapore

My first podcast from my new home in Singapore, which has been wonderful so far. In addition to impressions of my first weeks in the third period at INSEAD (and the exciting course projects), I also share a remix of a new system by teru as well as a clip from a fun and slightly ridiculous song by Peter O'Neil from Philly about an amazing place in my home state of New Jersey, good ole Belmar.

Hope all is well. In case you wonder, this is actually the 9th episode, not the 11th, which I mistakingly said in the podcast....

This week's podcast starts off with a short "school" rap written back in 1999 when I was a teacher in Harlem. It also includes a spoken word piece about the week called "tutorial dreams," and then finishes up with an Insead original rap by co-MBA student Christine Driscoll, recorded live last night at the Vieux Moulin dinner party.
