New Remix - Drastic Independence

On my Premixed album last year, I had included a remix version of my song "More than 2 Sides" by fourstones that was pretty good, but I actually think that this new version, titled "Drastic Independence" (free mp3) by CCmixter artist radiotimes, is actually better.

Radiotimes' description: "This is another worthy wordy offering featuring the great vox and words of Colin Mutchler. Kept the arrangement to a minimum to emphasise the words just added some harmony and a bit of Duane Eddyish guitar to break it up a bit"

It reminds me about the value of sharing via the internet. If when you think a piece of culture or expression has run it's course, someone picks it up and makes something even better with it. Thanks radiotimes!

Social Innovation Camp in London this weekend

This weekend in East London is what looks like an amazing first of it's kind event that hopefully will be replicated across the world soon. Based on the Barcamp / Unconference events that have blown up over the last year or so, Social Innovation Camp puts teams of techies with social entrepreneurs whose 5 ideas have been chosen before the weekend event.

My housemate Seth actually submitted one of the selected ideas, which is Stuffshare, Freecycle meets Street Car . The idea that actually seems the most similar to my own vision for Open Green is Barcode Wikipedia:

A site for storing user-generated information – such as carbon footprint, manufacturing conditions and reviews - against a product, identified by its barcode number.

Even though I'm a bit disappointed to not have submitted an idea to the perfect event for my converging interests (too much of my time focused on my job), it'll be cool to attend the final session tomorrow afternoon.

Testosterone in Four Acts

About one day a week, I spend my morning and evening bike commute to a from the office listening to one of the best all time radio shows, This American Life. If you haven't heard it, and are willing to put on during a Saturday or Sunday morning while doing laundry or cleaning up around the house, then subscribe to the podcast.

This past week, there was one that I thought deserved special mention, partly because I have a "sexuality" category on this blog but very little content to speak of.

From thislife.org:

Stories of people getting more testosterone and coming to regret it. And of people losing it and coming to appreciate life without it. The pros and cons of the hormone of desire.

Barack: Don't Fall for the Clinton Bait

Reading about Tuesday's Clinton survival gave me pause about the potential for an Obama and Democratic victory. Not because of the votes, and not because of my independent friend Mark telling me to drop the "Barack the Vote" from my Gmail status because "Obama's tax policy sucks."

But more so because the quality and mood the conversation seems to have shifted to a less productive and inspiring one. Check out this article on why it's getting dangerous for the Democrats.

Remember, the way that we move forward is that we actually have to proactively move our political culture forward. This week it seems like Barack Obama's campaign may have taken the bait (or at least responded to what seemed like effective attacks from the Clinton camp) and begun attacking Hillary.

Barack: this is NOT the way you are going to win the presidency. The way you will win the presidency is by continuing to not only talk about a new kind of politics, but by being a new kind of politics. Seriously, this is about right now. Today. This week. And your campaign needs to take a deep breath and revisit what's important for the country and its people. Start the constructive, positive and bridge building conversation again.

Free Range's Open Value Chain Story

I've been psyched about the folks at Free Range Graphics ever since I saw the Meatrix back in 2002, and worked with Jonah when I produced the new Listen Up! website.

After getting an email about their 2008 Gratitude Grant, I found their Youtube channel which currently is highlighting a series of videos titled the "Story of Stuff," a straightforward look at the linear chain that is pretty much how things have been made over the last few hundred years. The next step of course is to more clearly tell the stories of (and financially support) the few innovators which are starting to use the new proposed renewable system.

Freddie Stevensen in the Black Cab Sessions

The other night I went to a Valentine's Day session in North London organized by the guys at eARmusic mostly to see my American friend Eli Salzman. I was happily surprised by the quality of the music, including the nervous but super innovative guitar player Jake Morley (redefining acoustic guitar performance) and the confident quirky Freddie Stevensen who's got a lot of talent and seems to be on the rise.

After listening to Freddie's recordings on his MySpace page I'd say he's a bit better live, with great rhythm and presence. Check out the video below which I guess is part of a larger series of Black Cab Sessions live from taxi's in London.

Culture "Premixed" for Collaboration

Over the last few years, I released free a cappella tracks of song fragments through the popular remix site CCmixter.org, explicitly ‘premixed’ (prepared for remixing) for producers to build on my words and music. Over 60+ remixes later, I am releasing the best 10 tracks commercially, sharing the revenues with the producers, and helping to build the market for open source music.

Check out the Premixed Story video that shares how this unique album came to life.

Before I post my final podcast from my amazing year at Insead, I wanted to post the following quicktime presentation of my trip to Bangalore, Mumbai, and Kerala in India. Particularly now following a violent week in Mumbai, Lebanon and Israel, I wanted to make sure to post this.

Overall, the experience of visiting the 'chaotic democracy,' 'functional anarchy,' and 'lumbering elephant' was amazing. Hope the video comes through to all of you iTunes subscribers.
The latest podcast from INSEAD Singapore highlights a new remix of "Everyday Choices" from teru as well as a new "Blue Ocean" song written collaboratively with friends while on a trip to China. Five remixes so far, and I include my favorite so far, "Blue Ocean Electro Rmx" by Beatbros. Once I head back to the France campus, I'll be talking with the authors of the Blue Ocean strategy book, W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, to see if they'll endorse the song.

Hope everyone is well. Keep up the good work and send feedback via the comments or over the voice mail at +1 206-984-3144.

First Experiences of INSEAD Singapore

My first podcast from my new home in Singapore, which has been wonderful so far. In addition to impressions of my first weeks in the third period at INSEAD (and the exciting course projects), I also share a remix of a new system by teru as well as a clip from a fun and slightly ridiculous song by Peter O'Neil from Philly about an amazing place in my home state of New Jersey, good ole Belmar.

Hope all is well. In case you wonder, this is actually the 9th episode, not the 11th, which I mistakingly said in the podcast....

This week's podcast starts off with a short "school" rap written back in 1999 when I was a teacher in Harlem. It also includes a spoken word piece about the week called "tutorial dreams," and then finishes up with an Insead original rap by co-MBA student Christine Driscoll, recorded live last night at the Vieux Moulin dinner party.
From Fort Greene to Moret Sur Loing

Download activefree podcast #2.

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of excitement, anticipation, goodbyes, and introductions. This activefree podcast #2 is the first from my new home, an amazing house called "Le Vieux Moulin" in a river in an old medieval town called Moret Sur Loing in France.

My first week of math class and the welcome week were full of surprises and amazing people (mostly men) from all over the world (except not much from Africa). This podcast includes samples of the last recordings in Brooklyn, the late night songs after most people left the goodbye/thank you party at St. Felix St. It also includes a decent improv song titled the same as one of my pre-reading books for Insead, called "Essential Mathematics for Economics & Business."

Also, much love to all those without homes and without a city in Louisianna, Mississippi, and elsewhere. It's strange to feel so out of touch with a major tragedy in my country. Be well.
