Sexuality Archives

As much as we consider ourselves an advanced society, the vast majority of human beings grow up learning about sexuality in a lonely and closeted way. With respect for privacy and intimacy, we are committed to being honest and open about our fears and experiences of sexuality in a way that causes breakthroughs for people and cultures.

Testosterone in Four Acts

About one day a week, I spend my morning and evening bike commute to a from the office listening to one of the best all time radio shows, This American Life. If you haven't heard it, and are willing to put on during a Saturday or Sunday morning while doing laundry or cleaning up around the house, then subscribe to the podcast.

This past week, there was one that I thought deserved special mention, partly because I have a "sexuality" category on this blog but very little content to speak of.

From thislife.org:

Stories of people getting more testosterone and coming to regret it. And of people losing it and coming to appreciate life without it. The pros and cons of the hormone of desire.

Heading to Nowhere this weekend

Nowhere

So after this guy / musician Eli Salzman asked me for directions on Saturday on East London, we exchanged a few texts. Busking in Europe for severla months, he seemed proactive on the music / arts scene, which I've been missing in my time in London so far. After watching No Direction Home this weekend (first online movie purchase/download), I've got back into my wannabe Bob Dylan mode, and ended up going to see Eli play a few songs and started talking about Burning Man. Turns out he's been several times, has a good friend going this weekend to Nowhere, an event in the similar spirit in the desert 3 and a half hours from Barcelona in the Pyrenees. After a few days of considering details and options, the moral of the story is, we're going.

I'll let you know how it turns out after I get back on Monday, but I'm looking forward to a few days with some creative spirits across Europe in the Montanas de Espana.

Idioteque enters the Youtube experiment

Inspired by Radiohead's prophetic song, a group of friends and I collaborated in November of 2001 to create Idioteque, using footage and images from "Here is New York," television ads and archives, and the film Baraka. Just submitted to youtube, and I'm curious to see how the response is, both from viewers and also from youtube and EMI and other copyright holders.

When we had first completed it, I exchanged emails with the Radiohead manager at the time, only to accidentally send a faulty link and lose track of the email address. Since then, I became educated in Fair Use and the possibility of the commons, and am interested to see how the youtube copyright battles shape up, and if Revver's more pro copyright model will win out. Till then, enjoy the video (despite the unfortunate thumbnail image chosen by youtube).

The Evolution of the Free Booty

I know I'm a little behind the curve on this one, but if you haven't already experienced "The Evolution of Dance," you have to watch this guy. The two founders of Free the White Booty agree. This guy's booty is free. Now for the rest of us...

A Valentines Day of Love & Peace

TVPPCard.jpg

I got this email from a friend Federico who had attended an Idealist.org meeting I put together in Brooklyn back in 2000. He's someone who's genuinely committed to building a culture of peace, and has a cool idea for a Valentine Peace Project that imagines a Valentine's Day that is a about "love, peace and global unity as a growing possibility in today's interconnected world.

You know I'm a dreamer (and I'm not the only one), so I recommend checking out the site, submitting a poem, or reading some of the other submission, and showing the love on February 14.

The Valentine Peace Project

Imagine all the people . .

Imagine a Valentine’s Day that is not only about romantic love or for lovers.

Imagine a Valentine’s Day that is about love, peace and global unity as a growing possibility in today’s interconnected world.

The Valentine Peace Project will take place this Valentine’s Day, involving students, artists, individuals, and groups committed to peace throughout the diverse communities of the city of Los Angeles and
beyond. The goal is to expand the framework of this romantic holiday into an opportunity for vision,
community and connection. As one expression of the day, volunteers throughout the city will be
distributing carnations with attached peace poems. The poems, written by Los Angeles area kids, adults,
families and others, are submitted through the Project website .The poems reflect an expanded possibility for Valentine’s Day and encompass themes of peace, sharing, and love in a wider sense. This is an opportunity to express or envision images of a more peaceful world, a unified global community or share experiences of connectedness with friends, family and
strangers alike.

Imagine a commuter on this day, or a pedestrian, or a student given a flower with words to brighten up the day – words from someone in their community – and the chance to realize the connections which occur in our every day.

Is this what makes peace a possibility in the world?

Why not create a Valentine’s Day signaling this possibility?

Inform others about the Project. Make it an opportunity for peace education - contact us for a lesson plan. Inform florists. Plan a day filled with carnations and poetry. Tell students and children
about the project. Get the media involved. Participate in carnation distribution. Develop your
own expression of an expanded vision of Valentine’s Day to include peacemaking along with love. Poems
submitted will be displayed on the website and distributed on Tuesday, February 14, 2006.
